PSA vs BGS vs CGC: Welcher Karten-Gradierungsservice ist der Richtige?

Professional card grading has transformed the trading card hobby into a serious collectibles market. When a card is submitted to a recognised grading service, it is evaluated by trained authenticators, assigned a numerical grade based on its condition, and encapsulated in a tamper-evident plastic case. The result is a certified, authenticated, condition-confirmed collectible that commands a significant premium over its ungraded counterpart on the secondary market.

The three major grading services you will encounter most often as a collector are PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator), BGS (Beckett Grading Services), and CGC (Certified Guaranty Company). Each has its own grading scale, reputation, turnaround times, and pricing structure. Understanding the differences helps you make an informed decision about where to send your cards — and which graded slabs to prioritise when buying from sellers like Gmenswisscard.

PSA: The Gold Standard for Sports Cards

PSA is widely considered the gold standard of trading card grading, particularly for sports cards. Founded in 1991, PSA has graded hundreds of millions of cards and built a reputation for consistent grading standards and strong market recognition. A PSA 10 (Gem Mint) grade on a desirable rookie card or vintage sports card can multiply the card's value many times over compared to an ungraded copy in similar condition.

PSA grades cards on a scale from 1 (Poor) to 10 (Gem Mint), with half-point grades available for some submissions. The grading criteria cover four main attributes: centering, corners, edges, and surface. For a PSA 10, the card must meet very strict standards across all four categories — near-perfect centering, four sharp corners with no wear, clean edges with no nicks, and a surface free of scratches, print lines, or staining.

PSA graded cards are highly liquid on resale markets. The PSA certification number can be verified instantly on PSA's public registry, making it easy for buyers to confirm the card's authenticity and grade. For sports cards in particular, PSA grades consistently achieve the strongest market premiums of any grading service.

The primary downside of PSA is turnaround time and cost. During periods of high demand, standard PSA submissions can take months. Express and walkthrough tiers are available but come with substantially higher fees. For collectors grading modern Pokemon cards or One Piece TCG cards, the cost-benefit calculation depends heavily on the card's current market value and how much the grade premium justifies the grading cost.

BGS: Subgrades and a Strict Standard

Beckett Grading Services (BGS) is the second major grading service and is particularly well-regarded for graded Pokemon cards and vintage sports cards. BGS uses a 10-point scale similar to PSA but adds a unique subgrade system: each card receives individual grades for Centering, Corners, Edges, and Surface, in addition to an overall grade. This transparency makes it easy to see exactly why a card received its overall grade.

The most coveted BGS grade is the BGS 9.5 (Gem Mint), which requires all four subgrades to be 9 or higher. A BGS 10 (Pristine) is extremely rare, requiring all four subgrades to be exactly 10 — these are uncommon even on freshly opened packs and command extraordinary premiums on sought-after cards.

BGS cases are thicker and more substantial than PSA cases, which some collectors prefer. The subgrade information is printed directly on the label inside the case, making condition details immediately visible without needing to look up a registry. For collectors who value detailed condition transparency, BGS is often the preferred option.

CGC: The Growing Challenger

CGC (Certified Guaranty Company) has traditionally been the dominant grader for comic books but expanded into trading cards and has grown its market share significantly. CGC uses a 10-point grading scale and has built a reputation for consistent grading and competitive pricing, particularly for Pokemon cards.

CGC grades are increasingly accepted by the collector community and often achieve prices close to PSA equivalents on modern Pokemon cards. For collectors who want a third-party alternative to PSA and BGS, CGC is a solid choice. Their cases are visually distinctive with a coloured label system, and their public registry allows buyers to verify grades before purchasing.

Which Service is Right for Your Cards?

For sports cards, PSA is almost always the preferred choice due to its dominant market position and the strongest resale premiums. For Pokemon cards, all three services are well-accepted, but PSA and BGS have the widest recognition among collectors. For One Piece TCG cards, CGC has been particularly active in the grading space and has become a popular choice for high-value singles.
